Fifth meeting: Lesson 4, Kazoku (Family)

For this meeting, we’re learning two things which is about numbers in Japanese and about family.

NUMBERS

1. Counting for people. nin- is use to counter a person.

1 Person = Hitori                                6 People = Rokunin
2 People = Futari                                7 People = Shincinin
3 People = Sanin                                 8 People = Hachinin
4 People = Yonin                                9 People = Kyuunin
5 People = Gonin                                10 People = Junnin

2. Whole Number.

1 = Ichi                                                6 = Roku
2 = Ni                                                  7 = Nana / Shichi
3 = San                                                8 = Hachi
4 = Yon                                               9 = Kyuu
5 = Go                                                 10 = Juu
11 = Juu Ichi                                       100 = Hyaku
300 = Sanbyaku                                  1000 = Sen
600 = Roppyaku                                 3000 = Sanzen
800 = Happyaku                                 8000 = Hasse
10,000 = Ichiman                                100,000 = Juuman
500,000 = Gojuuman                          10,000,000 = Senman

3. Age. Sai is use to represent age.

1 = Issai                                               6 = Rokusai                             11 = Juuissai
2 = Nisai                                              7 = Nanasai                             20 = Hatachi
3 = Sansai                                            8 = Hassai
4 = Yonsai                                           9 = Kyuusai
5 = Gosai                                             10 = Juusai

4. For general number such as hotel room, phone number and plat number will pronounce it one by one such as:

Door 606 = Roku, Zero, Roku,
03-234567889 = Zero, San, Yon, Go, Roku, Nana, Hachi, Hachi, Kyuu.

This is example for family chart. Be noted that the word in the box is use for represent as ‘my’. For example, はは (haha) means ‘my mother’ while おかあさん (okaasan) is for other person use besides your family member.
